Lake Michigan Crossing - Saturday Aug. 13th at North Avenue Beach Chicago

August 13, 2011 all day
Matt Lennert from Chicago along with Kevin "V" from North Carolina and Dimitry Burukhin from Highland Park, IL. will be doing a crossing of Lake Michigan this Saturday, Aug. 13th. The crossing will take approximately 10 -16 hours depending on the conditions. Matt came up with this crazy idea to help bring awareness to the sport of standup paddle boarding to the Chicago area. We plan on arriving at the North Avenue Beach around 5 pm Saturday. If you will be in the area, come out for the arrival…See More

Aloha V,

That's pretty cool that you and your wife both got into it! My wife hasn't got the bug yet... but my Daughter is hooked. Normally summers are pretty slow here on Maui, but this year we've been blessed with pretty consistent waves (YEEE HA!). During the summer swells I tend to head over to the west side and go out at either Ukumehame or Woody's. They're both fun waves. During the winter months (when I'm not at work) I can usually be found in the mornings at Kanaha. It's a pretty awesome wave before the wind picks up. There are some pretty good video clips of Kanaha on YouTube. Mostly small days, but it'll give you a feel for the waves.

I started off on the 11' 11" SOS "Big Red" a couple of years ago, then stepped down to a 10' 4" Jimmy Lewis last winter. Now I'm riding a 9'3" C4 Sub Vector and having a blast on it. I definitely test it's weight limit paddling around on it... but it's a blast to surf on!!!

Maybe I'll see you guys in the water in November

I will keep you posted if our journeys bring us by to Maui this Nov. If we do come maybe we can all do some paddling together. My wife and I have been taking about packing it up and moving out to Hawaii in the next few years. We have always be partial to Maui. I plan on doing more research before we make our decision. If you don't mind me asking. Hope long have you lived there and where did you move there from?

Hey V,
We've lived on Maui for 14 years now. I grew up on Oahu, and spent about ten years living on the Big Island before moving to Maui. Biggest challenge with living here is the cost of living. Work usually isn't that hard to find, but everything costs more... For me, I love being able to get in the water year round... so it's well worth it!
