Oh, I hope you have good insight to the places to go in WA. I heard about a place in Kirkland...(I think they do rentals) does that sound familiar? thanks.

Perfect...I'll check those out. The one I heard about is called: Perfectwave...(sp?) they got mentioned in a local mag so I'm sure alot of people will crowd-like me. If you don't recommend it please let me know. thanks.

Hey Joe, I usually put in at Marine Park in Fairhaven (end of Harris Ave) and then paddle south. If you go down and around Chuckanut Island, it's about 6 miles roundtrip. If the wind is out of the north I paddle north to Boulevard Park and or the marina. And of course there is always Lake Padden & Whatcom.

PS: not much wave action up here, unless it's boat wake stuff or wind blown. We do a lot of down winders where we get dropped off down Chuckanut with a big wind out of the south and paddle back to B'ham. No "real" waves though. Trust me, I've looked everywhere(-:

Hi Joe, I find Admiralty Inlet kind of fun. When the afternoon NW winds pick up and the tides permit, I will paddle up-wind to the rock jetty at Keystone, rest on the rocky beach, and then enjoy a little bit of excitement on an okay down-wind return. Wakes from the Alaska-bound cruise ships and the odd freighter at times will make it interesting.
Unless you are lucky enough to know someone who lives in Admiral's Cove who will let you use their private beach, there is a public fishing beach you can park you car at and launch from. (The fisherman there might watch you and ask what you are doing.) This park is about 1.5 miles south of Keystone along the Ebey bird preserve. So, it is about a 3 mile venture round trip on the water.
Be careful though- sometimes the tides , currents, random swells from the Strait, and other odd variables can make Admiralty Inlet a little tough, but most times I have found it a bit worthwhile.

do you have to take a lesson before renting? and this may be silly, but can you rent a guide to go along...? does that make sense?

As far as a perspective on competition... there has been a wide variety of skill levels the last two races; however, i think the main vibe of this race event is to have fun and meet great people who share the same love for SUP in the PNW!

Best.

I'll second what Russell said... it's all about fun, I bumped into a couple guys last week, literally, and both times each paddler made sure the other guy didn't fall in. I also got us off course twice, and both times somebody in the back yelled to us to get us back on course. Oh, and it's $5 to enter... much better than the $30-50 I'm used to in bike racing.
