I just started SUP surfing after 20 years of traditional surfing and thinking my normal winter suit will be to much now. I normally wear an Oneill Psycho 2x 3mm for winter surfing. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as suit thickness for winter. thank you

I'm wondering the same thing -- except in addition to winters in Santa Cruz, I'm also thinking about fall/spring flatwater days in Tahoe. I'm tempted to go with a 3/2 and then carry an under layer for the really cold days, but a friend of mine said I should go 4/3 "because it's easier to cool off by jumping into the water than it is to warm up if you get too cold out there." Expert opinions appreciated!
Just purchased a new ProMotion 4/3 suit for winter in Northern California, I asked a bunch of surfers and paddlers and no one hesistated, they all said 4/3
I personally think 4/3 is way to warm after spending quit a few days SUP surfing in Santa Cruz. I have been surfing in a spring suit and it has been plenty warm for October. I only fally in a couple times during a session so I think a 2mm would be perfect and maybe a 3mm on a big day or beach break where you may end up in the water a lot.
