Got a Digital Hero 5 wrist camera (standard) for my birthday. Notice on the website there are both standard or wide cameras. I'm sure I'll go for some glamour shots of myself here and there but hoping to get some great footage of others. I'm always amazed and inspirded by some of the things I catch glimpse of out in the water. I do like the wrist mount idea but not sure that even has an option for wide. So do I keep standard wrist or go wide and get the wrist option? I'll use both lay down and SUP along with some periodical snow skiing and skate.

Hi Chris, I have both versions, so maybe I can help? The regular lens, is the better option for shooting other people. The wide lens does not do so great once your subject is say more than 20 feet away. But, the pixel quality is high enough that you can crop a photo later to get your subject closer. The wide angle is the only way to go though for any shots/video of yourself. As far as the wrist mount, I was not super impressed with it, and ended up putting the camera on a lanyard & hanging it around my neck and then keeping it tucked under my rash guard until needed, or putting it in my board short cargo pocket.

If you get the wide angle, try mounting it to the front of your ski or snow board and then chase your buddies down the hill... great shots! Or aim it backwards and have them chase you...

You guys have to see some of the photos John has been taking with his Hero... attached to his paddle. It's a pretty cool angle and the video actually comes out pretty cool. He has a bunch of posts on his blog, http://www.paddlesurf.net

Thanks for the info. I decided to wait for a wide wrist model I heard was coming out in March. When nothing came out I mailed them and found out that there won’t be a kit for a wide wrist, it’s just a wrist mount for the wide camera. So, I went ahead and bought the surf model and will pick up the wrist mount when it comes out.
I got this just in time for this big swell that came in late this week. I made a hurried attempt to mount this just in front of my deck pad hoping I could get some good perspective with the nose of the board in the shots and maybe even some interesting angles on a nose ride or two if I managed not to kick the thing off. Unfortunately the high profile of the camera on the board didn’t hold up getting out through the break. I'm going to try and put a little more time into mounting it again and will just carry the camera on the way out and put it into the mount once outside. The good news is that my model C4 has those holes in the deck for paddle straps. I got the C4 EZ Straps that worked well as a lanyard attachment and I didn’t lose the camera.
If and when I make this happen I’ll post a few shots.

I got one to go with my garmin 405 on the other wrist. Do you find that the waterproofing mists up a bit on the inside whenever you want to take a picture?
