I am new at paddeling and already love it. I know this is going to be a life time sport for me. Most of my paddeling will be on a lake (Lake Travis in Austin Texas). I'b been reading blogs, articals and talking to as many people as I can. Here's my question: What is a great paddeling board for a female, 5-6 and about 140? I would like to get a board that is better then me so I can grow into it.

Looking at: Jimmy Lewis 11er, Starboard 11 2 or starboard ultimate blend. Thanks for the help! Pat

Great question. I started on an 11'9 which was a ton of fun for about 3 months, then I really wanted something smaller that surfed better in the waves. So I picked up a 10' custom from Tim Stamps. So here's my opinion: If you're going to be doing mostly lake and distance paddles stick with a bigger, stable board with less rocker like the Angulo 11'9. If you plan on surfing at all go with a hybrid style smaller board like the Angulo 10'4. Actually at your size I would just go for that smaller board right off the bat. Check out the new Angulo 10'8 they are coming out with this year.
Michael thanks! I've checked out Angulo and sent them an e-mail. I don't think I'll be surfing but the second I say that I will want to surf! There is a litle surfing in South Padre, Texas. Now I need to find a place to go and get some good instruction so I don't pick up a lot of bad habits. I've just rented the boards, jumped on and started! That's my MO (: Thanks again for the advice if you have any more I am all ears. Pat
Hi Pat,
Welcome, i give lots of lessons and demo's. Most of the lady's are in the same situation. I usually put them on a larger board at first to get use to paddling and standing up moving around. That is the JL 11' , JL 10'-6''SOS Big Red at 11'- 11'' , SOS Blue at 10'-10'' , my Custom APS 11' x 29 epoxy stand up. The ladies really like the Blue and the JL 10-6 allrounder. its a little smaller, lighter to carry and still has pleanty of float for them. Basically you want to look for a board that has stability first off. Your going to want some float to paddle distance on your lake and a flat bottom w/ limited roll or "V" in tail . Width to be at 28'' or better. The length will vary due to width and thickness. 10 foot range or little greater would be a good start. I think you may like the JL 10-6 alrounder. Its a great board for touring and work out paddles. It seems when I take out the girls for paddles the two most requested boards they want to paddle are the SOS Blue and JL 10-6 . As we all got into SUP in the beginning, you as all of us have we start off w/ a board and realize you will want to expand you quiver and the experience. We buy another board . Its the natural progression in this sport.. so it seems Good Luck
